Spangle

Spangle refers to the visible crystal pattern that sometimes appears on galvanized steel after the zinc coating cools and solidifies. It is created as zinc crystals grow on the surface during the cooling stage. Depending on process conditions, spangle may appear large, small, or nearly invisible.

Historically, bright spangled surfaces were often associated with traditional galvanized products and were valued for their decorative appearance. In modern manufacturing, some customers still prefer visible spangle, while others request minimized spangle for painting or smooth finishing applications.

The final appearance depends on bath chemistry, cooling rate, and production settings. Spangle itself does not automatically determine coating performance, but it can influence aesthetics and later surface treatments. Understanding spangle helps manufacturers match the product finish to customer expectations.
