Scaffolding

As a structure critical to the construction and maintenance of any tall building, scaffolding is used as a temporary, elevated platform used to support workers and materials.

It's essential for providing safe access to heights and ensuring stability during tasks that cannot be safely performed from the ground or finished floors.

Scaffolding is typically a modular system built from metal tubing (galvanized steel) or, traditionally, wood. Key components include:

  • Standards (Vertical Members): The upright tubes that bear the weight.
  • Ledgers (Horizontal Members): Connect the standards and provide longitudinal support.
  • Transoms (Bearers): Cross-members that support the actual working platforms, or boards.
  • Bracing: Diagonal tubes necessary for ensuring lateral stability against wind and sway.

The system must be rigorously designed and securely tied to the permanent structure to comply with strict safety regulations, managing dead loads (structure weight) and live loads (workers and materials). Proper assembly is paramount, as scaffolding failure poses significant safety risks.
