Microns
Microns, formally known as micrometres, are the fundamental unit of measurement used to express the thickness of the zinc coating applied during the galvanizing process for tubes and pipes.
Significance in Galvanizing
A micron is a minute unit of length, equivalent to one-millionth of a metre or one-thousandth of a millimetre.
In galvanizing, the measurement in microns is critical because the service life (how long the pipe resists corrosion) is arguably proportional to the coating thickness.
For manufacturers, measuring the thickness in microns is a daily quality control procedure, usually performed with magnetic induction gauges. This measurement directly validates compliance with quality standards like IS 4736, certifying that the finished tube or pipe has the necessary sacrificial zinc reserve to meet its expected durability requirements.
