Yield Stress

Written by Superior Technologies | 2026.02.26

Yield stress is the critical threshold on a material's stress-strain curve. Below this point, the material is "elastic" (it returns to its original shape like a rubber band). Once the yield stress is exceeded, the material undergoes plastic deformation—it is permanently bent or stretched. Engineers use this value to set the "limit state" for safe structural designs.
