Yield Strength

Written by Superior Technologies | 2026.03.05

To ensure a tube will not burst in the field, we use its yield strength to calculate its maximum allowable internal pressure. The industry standard for this is Barlow’s Formula:

(where P is internal pressure, Sy is the yield strength, t is wall thickness, and D is the outside diameter). When a mill performs a hydrostatic test, they use this formula to ensure the water pressure proves the pipe's integrity without permanently stretching (yielding) the metal.
