Luders Lines (Stretcher Strains)

Written by Superior Technologies | 2026.04.15

Luders Lines are visible, flame-like patterns or ridges that appear on the surface of low-carbon steel tubes when they are deformed beyond their yield point. These are caused by localized bands of plastic deformation. In industries where aesthetic appeal is paramount such as high-end furniture, automotive trim, or visible structural frames, Luders Lines are a major defect. They are typically prevented by a Skin Pass or Temper Rolling process at the hot strip mill to suppress the discontinuous yield point.
