Drawing Steel

Written by Superior Technologies | 2026.03.19

Drawing is a "cold-working" process used to produce high-precision tubing with thin walls or specialized shapes. A tube (the "mother tube") is pulled through a hardened steel or tungsten carbide die while a "mandrel" is held inside the tube to support the inner diameter. As the steel is "drawn" through the die, its diameter and wall thickness are reduced, and its length is increased. This process significantly improves the surface finish and dimensional tolerances. More importantly, it "work-hardens" the steel, increasing its yield strength. This is how manufacturers create lightweight, high-strength tubes for bicycle frames, aerospace components, and automotive steering columns.
