Bauschinger Effect

Written by Superior Technologies | 2026.04.15

This is a sophisticated mechanical phenomenon observed during the cold forming of tubes. It describes the reduction in a material's yield strength when the direction of plastic deformation is reversed. In tube manufacturing, a flat strip is first bent (tension on one side, compression on the other) and then often subjected to opposite forces during straightening or sizing. Understanding the Bauschinger Effect allows engineers to predict the final elasticity and residual stresses of the tube more accurately than standard one-way tensile tests suggest.
